The World of Bread – made of wood
Paneum in Asten (AT) is a spectacular special building that provides insights into the World of Bread. 1200 exhibits leave its visitors amazed. As do its square concrete footings and spiral staircase that leads to the heart of the meshed wooden structure. The free-standing shape was made of the future material MM crosslam cross-laminated timber produced and supplied by Mayr-Melnhof Holz.

1,000 m3 of MM crosslam cross-laminated timber
To celebrate backaldrin's 50th anniversary, the company's owner Peter Augendopler laid the foundation stone for this extraordinary wooden building in 2015. This Wunderkammer des Brotes (“Wondrous World of Bread”) was opened in October of 2017 and has since been used as a customer information centre and event forum. The structure offers seating for 120 visitors, a library with many technical publications on the topic of bread as well as exhibition rooms housing objects connected with bread and baked goods as well as similar topics related to the company.
The new Wunderkammer des Brotes (“Wondrous World of Bread”) is located at a site owned by the company in Asten. Its visitors are not only treated to interesting stories about bread, but also to spectacular and excellent architecture. It underlines the importance and substance of the exhibits and content showcased as well as the innovative strength of backaldrin.
The total object consists of two structures with a combined usable space of 990 m²: First, visitors enter the square footing structure which is used as an event area. Hovering above it is a cloud with adjacent exhibition area, an ideal room to stage the Wunderkammer des Brotes (“Wondrous World of Bread”).
