Living and studying in modern wooden containers
Woodie, located in Hamburg (DE) was designed to house 371 flats comprised of extendible “minimal modules”. The timber concrete hybrid structure consists of concrete footings and room modules that were completely pre-fabricated from solid wood in the plant. Mayr-Melnhof Holz supplied its MM crosslam load-bearing solid wood products. To allow for economical production, all work processes and time deadlines were adapted to one another.

Inspired by the stacked containers in Hamburg’s port area, the idea was born to prefabricate the 371 flats for the modern student accommodation project Woodie in container form, creating a template for other modular timber buildings in the urban context. The timber module structure predominantly consists of one room flats across six residential floors. All flats were delivered to the construction site in the form of complete modules with a wood façade and rear ventilation. The load-bearing footings on the ground floor were built using reinforced concrete to absorb the loads of the six-storey-tall wood containers above and transfer them into the foundations. The staircases are also made of reinforced concrete and serve to stiffen the building as well as to absorb wind loads.
All common areas of Woodie are equally well thought-out as the flats. Its entrance area called “Woodietorium” serves as the common living room for all residents, pooling many functions under a single roof: Here, friends can play table football or board games, stage small events such as concerts, follow football games, study or just read a book from the book exchange.
